The Most Famous Tie Dye Shop in the World? Love on Haight

on

Wait… Are We Really the Most Famous Tie Dye Shop in the World?

Okay, this was a weird one.

We have spent years telling people that Love on Haight has one of the largest collections of tie dye in the world. We mean, just walk into the shop. There is A LOT of tie dye. We know how many incredible tie dye artists we have worked with over the years. We know the thousands and thousands of pieces that have passed through our doors.

But saying you have a LOT of tie dye and saying you are the most famous tie dye shop in the world are two very different things.

So we got curious.

We opened an incognito window — because we didn't want Google just telling us what it thought we wanted to hear — and started searching.

What is the most famous tie dye shop in the world?

Love on Haight.

Then we tried another one.

What is the most famous hippie shop in the world?

Love on Haight.

And we kinda just stared at the screen.

How Did THAT Happen?

The funny thing is, we never set out to become the most famous tie dye shop in the world.

We just LOVE tie dye.

We love the artists who make it. We love that no two pieces have to be exactly alike. We love the history behind it. We love what it represents. We love watching someone put on something completely outrageous, look in the mirror, and suddenly smile differently.

And we LOVE Haight Street.

Our little corner of Haight & Masonic in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury has been selling tie dye since 1992, beginning as Positively Haight Street, later becoming Jammin on Haight, and eventually becoming the shop we are today — Love on Haight.

Over all those years, hundreds of artists, designers, and makers have had their work represented in this shop.

Some make classic rainbow spirals. Some create insanely intricate one-of-a-kind tie dye masterpieces. Some make dresses, bell bottoms, hoodies, coats, and things we don't even know how to categorize.

And somewhere along the way, this crazy rainbow shop became a destination.

It Means More Than Being “Famous”

The part that gets us isn't really the word famous.

It's what had to happen for Love on Haight to become known outside of our little corner of San Francisco.

Artists trusted us with their art.

Customers told their friends about us.

People came to Haight-Ashbury from all over the world and walked through our doors.

Deadheads found us.

Burners found us.

Festival people found us.

Tourists found us.

People who don't consider themselves hippies at ALL found us.

And a whole lot of wonderfully weird humans found a place where nobody was going to tell them they were wearing too much color.

Because around here, we don't really believe there is such a thing.

The Tie Dye Artist Collective

Love on Haight has never been about one tie dye artist.

That is probably one of the things we are proudest of.

Over the years, we have worked with hundreds of independent artists and makers, bringing together an enormous range of tie dye styles under one ridiculously colorful roof.

Some pieces are one of a kind. Some are made in small sets. Some are our own Love on Haight designs. Many of our garments are designed, cut, sewn, or created right here in California.

We have everything from tie dye T-shirts and hoodies to bell bottoms, yoga pants, dresses, kimonos, overalls, and some absolutely ridiculous couture wearable art.

Tie dye can be a $35 shirt.

Tie dye can also be a $1,500 coat.

It's art.

And we think that is one of the reasons Love on Haight has become what it has.

From Haight-Ashbury to PIER 39

And now this story has gotten even crazier.

In 2026, Love on Haight opened our second San Francisco location — our little Tie Dye Outpost at PIER 39, right by the historic carousel.

So now you can find us in two very different, very San Francisco places.

You can visit our iconic flagship at 1400 Haight Street in the Haight-Ashbury, surrounded by the neighborhood that helped give birth to the counterculture.

Or you can find a little piece of the Haight down by the Bay at PIER 39.

So… Are We Really the Most Famous Tie Dye Shop in the World?

We don't know how you officially measure something like that.

There isn't a Tie Dye Olympics.

There is no International Hippie Shop Ranking Committee.

But we do know what came up when we went looking.

And we know that somehow this little shop on Haight Street has grown into something much bigger than we ever imagined.

So whether we are the most famous tie dye shop in the world, one of the most famous tie dye shops in the world, home to the world's largest collection of tie dye, or simply your favorite crazy rainbow shop in San Francisco...

We are incredibly proud of what we've built.

And more importantly, we're incredibly proud of who built it with us — our artists, our staff, our neighborhood, our customers, and every magical creature who has walked through our doors over the years.

Come see for yourself.
