Love on Haight in the Press: 30+ Years of Tie-Dye, Haight-Ashbury & San Francisco Culture
Is Love on Haight the most famous tie-dye shop in the world?
After more than three decades on Haight Street, hundreds of artists, international television, airline and tourism features, national news, celebrity fashion moments, Grateful Dead culture and one very famous psychedelic storefront, we think we have a pretty good case.
Love on Haight — Always Positively Haight Street — traces its roots to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury in 1992. The shop has evolved from Positively Haight Street to Jammin on Haight to Love on Haight, but the mission has stayed colorful: support artists, celebrate individuality, make beautiful wearable art and keep a little of the magic of Haight-Ashbury alive.
Today, Love on Haight operates its iconic flagship at 1400 Haight Street and our second San Francisco location at PIER 39. Over the years, Love on Haight, Sunshine “Sunny” Powers, our artists and even our psychedelic storefront have appeared in media around the world.

PIER 39 Summer of Love Grand Opening — August 2026
In 2026, Love on Haight did something we had never done before.
We took Love on Haight beyond Haight Street.
Our second San Francisco shop — the Love on Haight Tie-Dye Outpost at PIER 39 — opened beside the historic San Francisco Carousel.
Our Grand Opening became part of PIER 39’s Summer of Love Weekend on August 22–23, 2026, with live music, a psychedelic Love on Haight tie-dye fashion show, a second line through PIER 39 and a whole lot of Haight-Ashbury color on the San Francisco waterfront.

The weekend generated another wave of press, event coverage and Bay Area television appearances. We are continuing to archive the individual morning-show clips as they become available online.
From Positively Haight Street to Love on Haight
The press history did not begin with the Love on Haight name.
1992 — Positively Haight Street
Jim Preston opened Positively Haight Street around the corner on Masonic Avenue, filled with tie-dye, rock-and-roll clothing and Haight-Ashbury counterculture.
1998 — 1400 Haight Street
Positively Haight Street moved into the colorful corner storefront at Haight and Masonic that remains our flagship today.

2012 — Jammin on Haight
The shop became Jammin on Haight.
2017 — Love on Haight
Sunshine purchased the business and Love on Haight was born.
2023 — San Francisco Legacy Business
The continuing history of the business was formally recognized through San Francisco’s Legacy Business program.
See the City of San Francisco Legacy Business report
2026 — Love on Haight at PIER 39
For the first time in more than three decades, Love on Haight expanded beyond Haight-Ashbury and opened a second San Francisco location.
Our Storefront Became Part of the Image of Haight-Ashbury
One of the coolest things we discovered while putting this archive together is that the building itself became famous.
Long before Instagram made colorful walls a thing, photographs of Positively Haight Street were being used in San Francisco tourism imagery, international travel guides, visitor publications and destination materials to represent Haight-Ashbury itself.
The same psychedelic corner continued through Jammin on Haight and Love on Haight.
Celebrity Tie-Dye & Fashion Moments
Love on Haight’s wearable art has crossed over into national fashion and celebrity coverage more than once.
Ray Dalio’s psychedelic Burning Man coat appeared in Vanity Fair and additional fashion coverage.
Then during Super Bowl LX week in San Francisco, Jason Kelce came shopping at Love on Haight, bought a tie-dye velvet coat and wore it shirtless to a New Heights party.
We have always believed tie-dye belongs EVERYWHERE.
Apparently that includes billionaires at Burning Man and shirtless NFL legends during Super Bowl week.
“We Will Get By, We Will Survive”
In March 2020, San Francisco shut down.
We boarded up Love on Haight.
Across the boards Sunny painted a line every Deadhead knew:
WE WILL GET BY
WE WILL SURVIVE
Then something extraordinary happened.
A photograph of the boarded Love on Haight storefront began traveling around the world.

For us, those words weren’t advertising.
They were what we needed to hear.
And apparently a lot of other people needed to hear them too.
Community Is Part of the Story
Not all of the press has been about tie-dye.
Some of the coverage we are proudest of is about our community.
During the devastating 2017 North Bay fires, Love on Haight became a major donation center and helped send truckloads of supplies to people affected by the fires.

In 2024, HealthRIGHT 360 honored Sunshine Powers with its Community Visionary Award.

Because to us, being part of Haight-Ashbury means more than having a store here.
It means taking care of the place that takes care of us.
